Does anyone know why after all these decades and traffic backups on the thruway that they have not widened the road and added lanes between the Harriman tolls and Albany or at lease exit 21?

I just do not get it, it would have been much cheaper many years ago if expense was an issue.

Probably because 99.9% of the state funds go to areas south of Westchester County. Upstate NY might as well be another planet.

Aside from heading north on Friday afternoons and south on Sunday afternoons, it's usually quiet. I would be more in favor of improving the road conditions between Exit 17 and 18 as maneuvering around potholes can be tricky at highway speeds.

If I'm thinking of the same spot, I agree that spot is terrible north bound, right lane, just after the rest stop, for about 2 miles. The only problem I think is that is the repair. Those holes developed last winter.

Still it's been like that for 20 + years, just widening then the south bound side from 18 down would cut down on the accidents reducing expenses I would think.

If the upstate economy benefits from weekend travel from the south would it not be advantageous to encourage it then loosing travelers because they are frustrated with a weekend nightmare ride home?

Speaking from the "other planet", I am always delighted once I go north of Harriman when we have to travel downstate. I delight in leaving the area where people are like ants on candy!

Because to widen the road falls into the same catagory of problems that replaceing the TZ Bridge does.

1) Money
2) Enviromentalists
3) Unions
4) Money

Every year they wait the cost keeps going up, the cost then seems just as high as the current costs, union labor costs will drive the project up 40%. Nobody has the guts to say we are doing it this way, end of discussion.

Was it last year they finally finished replacing the Harriman Toll Booths which date to 1957??? Why are tolls still being paid? The road should have been paid off decades ago???

Generally I'm pro-union, but I totally agree with this post...the Unions these days are more like primadonnas than anything. The reason why these projects are so expensive are mostly due to labor costs.

The state general fund doesn't fund the Thruway at all, all money used to maintain the Thruway comes from tolls. If they eliminated the tolls, they would get some federal funding, but they'd also have to come up with a state match. Keeping the tolls means the thruway costs the state $0.

And the upgrades and improvements directly reflect the states investment. Let them keep it up and the TZ bridge will collapse in the Hudson...
