OK time for a new game: Describe Upstate New York in terms of another state or country. You can be as uplifting to Upstate or downputting to it as you want!
For instance...
Upstate New York is like New England, except Yankee and Sox fans don't kill each other... and in fact have been known to interbreed...
OR
Upstate New York is like Canada but with more snow and worse hockey players...
OR
Upstate New York is like Massachusetts, but without the Fluffernutter sandwiches and with more old guys named Pops...
Upstate New York is like Pennsylvania, the rolling hills and mountians of the rural Southern Tier matching the same for the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
Anyway, Upstate NY is like North Carolina only with a few more wrinkles.
Charlotte may be the new Upstate NY, but Upstate is nothing like the rest of North Carolina. Even the scenery is different. North Carolina is mostly southern pine, less interconnected waterways. Raleigh has not much of a downtown and is mostly urban sprawl. The only thing similar is the people from Upstate NY.
North Carolina was used for the film "The Last of the Mohicans." And the scenery really looks a lot like John Boyd Thatcher State Park (~5 minutes from the house I grew up in.) So I don't think it's totally different.
