This idea just came to me due to an article about a mansion in Saratoga Springs and knowing about multi million dollar homes in the Skaneateles area around Skaneateles Lake(Derek Jeter and the Clintons considered the area and John Walsh of America's Most Wanted fame has/had a property there). I know that parts of the Thousand Islands region has some properties close to and over $1 million(Alan Jackson of country music fame, has/had a property in the area).
There are other places I know of but, what are some other places that come to mind in terms of having homes over $1 million dollars? I ask this, because there seems to be this idea by some that Upstate is or would be devoid of such properties.
Not sure if it's still true, but IIRC there's been a time when lakefront property on Canandaigua Lake was second only to Lake Tahoe among major lakefront real estate regions.
These areas are known for being areas where college/university/medical professionals, etc. live in the area(Skaneateles is also SW of Syracuse, about 25-30 minutes away and Auburn is about 10-15 minutes away to the west).
I'm not sure that this is a real accurate way of judging affluency. Every post is a house for sale, meaning they are leaving the area, and no longer residents. A lot of million+ homes are owned by people that don't even live in the area, and they many be their 2nd, or 5th home but have a residence somewhere else. How many million+ houses aren't for sale?
I've notice that the Bills have a constant turnover and are always buying million dollar homes. 2 of the listed postings ARE Bills houses. One is Beasly's.

I think the fact that such homes are even available in those communities does indicate that there is an affluent population within them, whether full or part time. Many of these places do not have professional athletes or celebrities, but may be owned by medical professionals, business owners, academic faculty/staff, coaches, managers in certain industries(engineering, HR), etc.
^ Very nice property, but that assessment will be challenged, guaranteed. Also keep in mind that any property is only worth what someone will pay for it in the open market.
Something else, many people also live a pretty quiet life here, but may have a million dollar house in Florida, with a Ferrari in the garage.
Many people, especially business owners have their money tied up in their business, or have stocks, etc. I understand Warren Buffet has lived in the same house for 60 years, and it's only 100+ thousand.
So, OK, it may be one way of looking affluency, but not accurately.
