Look into Poughkeepsie. I havent lived there for years, but there seemed to be a largish black community along the arterial/s and Main Street. A pretty stark sense of clearly separate environments, the black areas sadly, predictably, faring the worst and within walking distance from Seven Sisters/Ivy League Vassar.

Po’town is in the Hudson Valley region - Dutchess County. I grew up about in Millbrook but my grandparents lived in Poughkeepsie and I lived there for years too.

If memory serves, I think Newburgh and Middletown or Monticello have/had larger African American communities. A quick Google search could determine whether any of these are worth perusing.

Side idea: doesn’t involve black history, but Oniontown or Onion Town was a scary place not far from where I grew up. I’ve been there a couple of times. Someone made YouTube videos harassing those poor people. It was sick. It was not safe for outsiders - probably because high school kids harassed these folks. Not me - I never got close enough. Too scared, but I was curious. Not much to do when you live in the woods.. I don’t think police would go there. Really sad but interesting if you can get through the exaggerated nonsense.

Great build on, chkthabkgod! And good luck! It was pretty late when I posted my comment and I was going off memory. I scrolled past all the sports photos and got confused for a minute!

I don’t know sports - just a logo. Poughkeepsie has another college, Marist (of polling renown) and they had a kickin basket ball team for a while. I happened to have the privilege of designing the Marist Fox logo - 1994-2007

The school paid a LOT for my artwork... I was 19. Working for a photographer for a few bucks. I got $15 for that job. He looks like a 19 y/o who had no clue put him together and got paid 15 bucks : ) No computer. Just board, tape and film overlay. Yikes. Pretty raw. The only reason the town liked the logo was because the team did so well. : )

I’m all set. This is just more or less a guide to illustrate a widespread presence throughout this portion of the state through sports, schools, middle class areas, history, workplace/business aspects(professionals, ownership, particular companies, etc.), government officials, community based media, etc. Basically, it is a way to get acquainted with the population, as many people may only think of the NYC area or just the bigger Upstate cities, but not smaller cities, suburbs or even small towns/rural areas. There are also the stereotypical aspects and this just offers some balance.
