As a recently retired person I have made lots of changes to my life in the last year including: leaving a job, moving from a home of 20 years to a new town, quitting a couple clubs and organizations, etc. All these actions involve saying good bye to people that I have known for a long time but don't have the type of relationship that would involve continued communication in "my new life."
Lots of people may have been hurt when I did not stop by and say a final good bye when I left. But I find good byes so hard. How about you, would you enjoy saying good by in these situations? Would you go around a say a final good by?
Yes, I would feel compelled to say goodbye, as a way to show appreciation for their friendship and contribution to my life, and to give a sense of closure.
Then again, I never assume that I won't see someone ever again, even if the likelihood is slim. Life is full of surprises!
I have a very hard time with goodbyes, and I understand why you would find it hard. I think I would say a simple goodbye to people I knew more casually and force myself to say goodbyes to ones that are harder.
I never have and never would say goodbye to friends, even if I know chances are we may never see each other again..that's because (as far as I'm concerned) they will always still be my friend, and like zentropa said "life is full of surprises", and you never know when your paths will cross again.
I agree with the OP. I am not good with goodbyes. If I were retiring tomorrow after 20 years, I might go as far as to tell people that I was going to take a few weeks off. Then I would just suddenly not be around anymore. Maybe it's wrong, but that is how I would handle it.
