When I read threads like this I usually think that the incident was the "straw that broke the camels back".
Haven't you ever had a day when everything seems to go wrong? You start out stubbing your big toe on the night stand, then you discover that you have ran out of coffee, then your car battery is dead. When you finally get to work, your boss yells at you for being late and then you open your emails to discover some huge work problem. And, on and on all day long.
At the end of this long day some incident, like the elevator problem, happens and it drives you bananas!
It isn't the one incident that is the real problem but it was the "straw that broke the camels back" and you focus on that one incident.
Maybe he should have mentioned that then, because nowhere in the original message would I know that the OP has been thru he** and back.
I went out to my car to get my coat. I came back in on the first floor, going up to the fifth floor, and someone jumps in on the fourth floor, presses the first floor button, and I have to ride down then back up.
I don't think the guy knew I was going to the fifth, but does this annoy you?
Last time I checked, that isn't how elevators work... The elevator goes to 5 before going down to 1.

But then I'm not in a non-romantic relationship with an elevator and getting upset when someone who knows how to use it gets on.
(You should learn how to push its buttons. Things will work out better for you.)
Guy on 4th floor pushed button wanting to do down and that is what the elevator did.
That's what the elevator at work does. For some reason, "down" has precedence, even if "up" was pushed first. It's still common practice to push the button for the floor you want when you get onto an elevator, not study the board to determine where it's headed first. I am sure the guy didn't know his button pushing would take over the direction, he probably thought after it got up to 5 it'd go back down to his floor. I really think you're over-thinking this and being offended when nothing deliberately offensive took place, JMO.

That's exactly what I am saying.
He was on the elevator going up to pick up man who was on the 4th floor going down.
I've been working in high rise office buildings for the last 23 years and I do not see any other way this could have happened.
