I think it is cute if a grown man is a Jimmy or Tommy. Nobody in this thread has mentioned if it is ok to use variations of a name if female. Is it Liz or Beth for Elizabeth? Cathy or Kate for Catherine? I disliked my given name "Frances" as a child.
So I used Fran; my family called me Franny. After I graduated from college, I returned to Frances. My family still calls me Fran and a few close friends as it is easier, being one syllable. If my Mom is angry with me, she calls me Frances!
I don't really see a problem with Jimmy, Bobby, Johnny, etc. but if you're an adult and you still go by Lil Ray Ray or something like that, then it's a problem.
The trend I see is some names or nicknames disappearing altogether.
I haven't met a young Jimmy, Jonny, Bobbie, etc in a long time.
I had a coworker who has two young sons. Named them Robert and Daniel. I told him his kids were going to have trouble in school with such weird names. Everyone else will be Aidan, Braydon, or Jaydon. Or DeShawn, LaShawn, MaShawn, or Declan.
I went to school with a kid named Junior Ray- that was his given name. Here in Hawaii some men are named Boy.
Ha.....my father picked up that nickname as a child. One day my grandfather asked my grandmother, "Wheres the boy?" lol......his siblings heard and ran with it and called him Boy until they died in their 60's-80's.
My cousins still call him Uncle Boy and he's in his mid-80's. No one else calls him that except my cousins.
I am a James, so often got called Jimmy growing up. I hated it then, I hate it now. I think I have one Aunt who still does it but everyone else calls me Jim or James and gets corrected quickly if they try Jimmy.
