Just like you I have had to add more to the tip, I notice even when I have said "that's not enough" and put more money in the other party just sits there....LOL. They don't reach for their wallet most of the time to add in more money.

I will not get up from the table if the tip isn't enough, but that will be it for eating out with that person.

I don't ask - I just look to make sure the server is not getting stiffed. I have noticed that when I am picking up the tab, that the person I am with sometimes glance at the amount I am writing in for tip. I don't get offended - I know they are just looking out for the server. Unfortunately, the world is full of people that have no qualms about screwing over a server.

Exactly, although it has been decades since I was a server I still remember what it was like. Many don't seem to realize that servers are taxed on the assumption that they're getting at least 15% of their sales.

I can't stand people who get good service and than think it's OK to leave a bad tip.
