Exploring the Charlotte light rail.Charlotte ObserverCharlotte, N.C. Pop. 792,862
Charlotte’s light-rail line is certainly more of an up-and-comer than a well-rounded network, with its first 10-mile route opening in 2007. But what a story it’s been:
Republican Mayor Pat McCrory put his career on the line for mass transit, asking this auto-loving Southern city home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame) to pony up nearly $500 million for the LYNX line. Sure as shootin’, voters responded. The rail line blew through 2020 ridership projects last summer, sparking new development downtown. Ridership has dropped along with the economy and gas prices since then, forcing service cuts. Still, other Southern cities have sent delegates to Charlotte to learn from this regional transit pioneer

Charlotte/Metrolina:

Raleigh/Triangle, metro for winners. Charlotte, I don't want to say metro for losers so I'll let the numbers speak

Charlotte's uptown Epicenter looks like a mall, people seem impressed by the gas flames, man gets frozen yogurt with some toppings ("get some of them butterfingers", lol, loved that ), then proceeds onto night time sparse light rail platform where…I kid you not…a lady approaches and asks "do you like strip clubs?", lol ! Man says he doesn't want to ride train, who can blame him, haha! Relatively few people get into the train at a pace that suggest they'd rather be anywhere else than uptown Charlotte, very few young people (except for the strip club lady ) , train just sits there presumably waiting for more people to actually ride the thing at night. Man steps out onto nearly empty uptown streets, looks around seemly bewildered at the lack of energy, nothing going on but a few folks roaming around apparently aimless and board. Men seems board to death, someone ask's "Larry what are you doing" Larry says "Nothing, waiting to do something".

Never a dull moment in exciting, culture filled, thriving with activity, uptown Charlotte! Bwaahahaha!
