Diversity in Charlotte vs Raleigh (townhouse, job market, purchase)

My wife and I are in our mid-thirties with two young children. We currently live in Redlands, California and are looking to make the big move to North Carolina. We have a townhouse in California and with the appreciation it looks like we could purchase a really wonderful property in Charlotte or Raleigh.
Our biggest concerns are a wonderful school district for our children (13 and 5), a great job market (healthcare industry and graphic design industry), and diversity. My wife and I are an interracial couple and moving from liberal California does have some concerns.
Any advice or insight that anyone has about these areas would be wonderful.
