You & I saw NJ go from no sales tax & no income tax to the mess it is today. Christie Whitman started the descent into hell so that she & her wealthy friends could pay less. The NC tax cut is even worse, now taxing pensions.
sb and NCN - I guess I must be a dinosaur! Even as a left-handed monkey wrench I did all of those Palmer Method penmanship exercises and our desks had that round hole for ink bottles! But I do have beautiful handwriting. My sister, a school occupational therapist, tells me that the schools don't make kids memorize their times tables anymore! That's a shame and a crime! Penmanship, music and art are now reserved for the "Masterpiece Theatre" crowd!

NCN - You'll know things have really gotten bad in NC when the Governor pays companies to "stay" in the state ala Chris Christie. Company A - "Yeah, we were going to move to South Carolina, but if you spot us $75,000,0000, we'll just move our company headquarters three towns over instead"! "Mississippi -the new Cheapspot!"

sb - The year Christy Whitman pulled her little sales tax stunt, the property taxes on my house went from $2600 to $4200 in one fell swoop! Can you imagine this happening here in NC? Lowes would have a run on pitchforks and lynchings would be back in style!

It is my opinion that if teachers compare their salaries and living expenses here and elsewhere, they will want to stay in North Carolina, not to mention the weather and not having to drive in snow.

I cannot remember which magazine it was but a comparison of teacher pay beyond entry level per hours worked shows them to being paid more per hour than corporate America. They have been very successful in brainwashing the general public when they are better off than many people who have more responsibility and works longer hours. I think they need bathroom breaks more than they need more money. I am sure school volunteers could furnish this.

Kindergarten in public schools started in the very early 70's. Before that it was always one teacher in each classroom.

Emissary, I can ask my sister about the teacher aides. She & her husband taught special ed in a 4 room school house surrounded by pig farms for 36 years. No exaggeration.

I doubt that teachers in South Jersey ever got to $90K. My sister taught summer school & my brother-in-law held a part-time job to pay the college bills for their 2 kids.

I remember when my oldest cousin, in Michigan, & his wife started teaching in the mid 60s. They both taught regular school &summer school & he held a part-time job year round.

Historically, teaching & all "female" jobs had terrible pay scales because it used to be the law that women made half of what men made.

But back to the topic. . .I don't remember how much my property tax went up immediately from Christie Whitman's tax cut. My town had an extensive recycling program that paid for a lot of the township's expenses. It wasn't until the Abbott Districts caused the state to stop paying for most of the schools besides the Abbott District schools that we really got hit. My taxes on a 2 bedroom bungalow went from $2K to just under $4K the last 4 years that I was there. (& I mean $8 less than 4K)

It's been on the news that the CFO of one of the companies is from Union County. That probably played into the decision more than the tax cuts.

When will people learn that trickle down does not work. Not at all. Proven bad economics over and over.

mlhm - Yes, especially when you notice that the "trickle down" is yellow and doesn't smell so good!

sb - Sometimes I think that the differences between South Jersey and North Jersey makes them seem worlds apart!

NCN - I think most of NJ has had kindergarten since my grandmother's day and she was born in 1893! But it was only halfday and half of a school year. Some of the inner-city school systems have had pre-school (Head Start) since the mid 70's, but from what I've read, all of the gains resulting from this extra education, tends to wear off by the time they get to 4th grade in their less than gold star schools!

I agree with this. However I also absolutely believe that experiments in socialism don't work either. It's been proven time after time.

Both aspects of the economy are enabled by the government. IMO, get the government out of the economy and things will get better.

Did the hours worked include prep time, writing lesson plans, grading papers & tests which are normally done at home? Did it also include time working on IEPs? In other words, how much of your work could someone write off as non-existent, or did you do all of your work at work?

Emissary, North Jersey & South Jersey are as different as Philadelphia & NYC. . . worlds apart. . .I could go on but it would be going off topic to do that.

I just think that the tax cuts have nothing to do with these moves. The property taxes played a big part & the schools in Charlotte probably look stellar compared to Newark. They also want proximity to the airport. They could get pretty darned close to PHL on some land that I know of, but not as close as they can get to CLT on Wilkinson Blvd, & they'd still get hit over the head with property taxes.

The thing is ...you always get too much government or too little government. We never get the Goldilock's "It's Juuussst Right" version!

We (ex-NJ) are getting to watch, all over again, what Republican Tax cuts can do to the overall tax picture. Property taxes will be going up as they did in NJ and more recent in Texas (yes they have high property taxes). This will stop the perceived tax advantage that states think they have.

I also saw the mess that Whitmann Started.
