It only took them three months past the original deadline and the gavel didn't go down until 4 a.m. Wednesday, but our much beloved legislature has finally stopped wasting time, money and resources and finished its work for the year. Unless Gov. McCrory vetoes the budget, in which case they get to grace Raleigh with their presence one time this year. The damage they did included limiting light rail expenditures to just $500K annually (take that, you 21st century metropolitan areas!), cutting tax rates for the rich over the middle class and expanding the sales tax and DMV fees, among many other lowlights.

Without even getting into the content of the legislation (and there's been a lot that can be critiqued lately- mainly about NC generally becoming more regressive (in economic policy, social climate, etc.)), I always wonder effect holding meetings at such an odd hour (4 am) has on the legislation that gets passed at that time of night. It happens with local school boards and other political bodies as well and I have to think there's a "let's just pass this so we can go home and go to sleep" sentiment by meeting that late, which is dangerous.
