Just booked a nice suite at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta, forget it, we're outta here on Thursday afternoon and will return when power comes back. Booked through Weds, if we need more time we'll add, if power is back on we'll cancel those nights. It's just not worth it to stick around for these events.

Have you been watching the models? It's actually moved south since this time yesterday from landfall at NC/VA border to NC/SC border now. Still too far out to know how we will be impacted and who is truly out of the cone of doom unfortunately.

We were in Northern Virginia when hurricane Isabel came through. It was only about a category one when it hit us, but people were without power for a week or two. And there was definitely a water advisory because the water treatment plants were either without power or they were contaminated for some reason. The stores were sold out of water, too. So I would definitely be prepared with water even if you are on city water.

That's worse then for Raleigh, if it hit the NC/VA border it would be north of us and we would be spared. We booked that hotel for now, but certainly if Atlanta is in the path, we'll go somewhere else. The bottom line is we're not sticking around here unless by some miracle this thing misses Raleigh.

We're still unsure, might even do Asheville depending on the path. But we see no reason to stick it out in Raleigh without power for a week or two. We are remote employees and can work from the comfort of a nice hotel suite. We'll all know Wednesday where this thing is going to hit, it could veer north and hit VA who knows...

During Fran there were reports of 80 mph winds in Cary. Being inland, its unlikely that we'll get sustained hurricane force winds (in RDU area) as the storm will end up significantly weakening as soon as it touches land, but 80 mph gusts can certainly do damage to structures (trees) that have over saturated grounds. I also remember the water treatment plant going offline in Raleigh for a few days during Fran.

I was here for Fran and it wasn't good. Without power for several days; others without power for weeks and some for months.

Because Raleigh had received substantial rain the week before, the trees were already weakened and many went down. The city was burning debris south of town for a solid YEAR after the storm hit. The rain will be significant, particularly if the storm is a slow-mover, as is predicted.

And don't get caught up in small forecast changes. There will be fluctuation between now and landfall, but it's not so much where the eye goes, but the entire wind field that is the issue. I'm assuming a Fran-like impact until told otherwise.

Side note: what the heck is up with storms starting with the letter F? Fran, Floyd and now Florence??? Can we just skip F from now on?
