My family and I are planning to relocate from Upstate NY to a somewhat warmer climate within the next two years. I thought it would be fun to take a month long road trip next summer (when our two children are a little older) to visit 5 or 6 towns that we may want to move to. If anyone has any suggestions about where we should look into I would be open to your ideas. I have done extensive research regaring crime, weather, schools, jobs, etc using the internet but there is nothing like first hand advice.

Our kids will only be 8 and 6 so a good school system may be important unless we utilize private schools. Low crime is very important to us. Weather needs to be less cold than upstate ny (which shouldn't be hard to find!) Some jobs would also be a plus, I will be looking for a teaching job and my husband for something in law enforcement. We currently live in a small rural town about an hour from Rochester and would like to be a little closer to 'things', but a small town would be ok.

I appreciate any information you can give us in our search for a great place to call home!

Do you want to live in an area with flat land, rolling hills or mountains? How close to a commerical airport do you want to be? How close do you want be to a city of Rochester's size (200K+)?

Define "small" in small city.

I guess a small city would have a mall, a museum, zoo and some other cultural offerings and shopping venues.

First rate NC airports are Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. So, you would want to be within a 30 minute drive of those airports locations.

If you don't mind a limited selection of airlines and scheduled flights, you can also consider Asheville, Fayetteville and Wilmington.

I simply can't give you advice becuase I also moved to NC from the Rochester area and feel I made a mistake. I don't think I'd be the right person to give you information. I'm moving back to Rochester this year becuase one thing that you will likely notice, is that the sense of community Rochester has is severly lacking in much of NC.

Just out of curiousity, but would you be able to elaborate on your statement in last sentence of your post? I currently live on Long Island and am moving to NC in a month or so, but I'd like to understand what it is that you meant. I don't know much about Rochester so you can just imagine how confused I am. Thanks!

Default rochester to NC

I'm interested to know why the person who moved from Rochester to NC wants to move back? What area are you from and where did you relocate to in NC?

Isn't the weather much better down there? What are the schools and jobs like compared to here? Thanks!!
