I am considering moving to Lincoln County or Gaston County from Michigan with my family. I am a teacher but my husband is a machinist and I wonder about his job prospects. It seems like everyone I talk to in Michigan is going to North Carolina or else knows someone that went and loves it. Can North Carolina really be as good as everyone says? Are there really enough jobs for its locals and all of the transplants that are flooding there or are people just moving there only to be disappointed. Michigan has so few prospects I have a hard time believing that other states are doing so well.

I would like to know what the locals think or if there any transplants that found a different reality from what they were told or expected. I would especially like to hear from any of those MIchiganians that keep disappearing from the Great Lakes State. Are you OK?

I did a google of the area and seem quite a few machinist jobs pop up in the area. I would suggest Lincoln over Gaston county.just for it more central located between other cities that you husband can look for work in if he doesnt find anything specific to that county. Cities that are in Lincolnton that you may cross are Lincolnton, and Denver out of the county but very short commute are Hickory, Mooresville, Gastonia, and about 45 minute commute to Charlotte. I also suggest Lincoln over Gaston due to it hasnt had the flood of transplants as Gaston and Iredell counties have had so the infrastructure is still in good shape for Lincoln and home prices are very reasonable.

Here is my slant
I am a carolian native that lives in Huntersville (next door to lincoln) where I am happy at LOL but my sweet heart lives in a small rolling hill village west side of Lincolnton that you can see miles of country side and it hard for us to work out a agreement of trying to meet in middle of the two lifestyles . hehe
Country peace vs amenities abound LOL they might win.

Good Luck

I'm a machinist and there is work available. Honda is building a passenger jet production plant that will have a couple hundred high paying jobs, but I believe it is near Greensboro. Don't know if these will be union. I would say there is plenty of work but wages would be generally less than anywhere up North.

My son is a CNC Machinists and has no problem finding a job. Frankly, he makes more than I do as a Realtor. If you need job leads, let me know. I can also help with finding a home.

I currntly live in PA, a strong union state like michigan. Something thing to remember about unions down south...thankfully, they have so little influence, let alone power, down south, they are not really the money you pay to be in one. You will not have the socialist-style laws of PA (where I am now) and the mafia style-laws of NY, so there is less corruption in the government there. You will surely get paid less, unless he transfers with his company...but remember you are paying less cash for the cost of living, depending on where you are.

I am moving down in June to teach. You could also consider Charleston, SC, Greenville, SC as places to move too.

Some folks will most likely take exception to your views on unions - but not me Welcome to the Carolinas!
