The kicker is that 118 degrees felt like we were standing in a frying pan on the asphalt road. Several miles from that little general store there was a female runner that hot day. Our whole trip was hot. Most days averaged between 100 to 105. It was extremely dry and there were dust devils everyplace.
The flip side of that is that it is also dangerous to travel in the Rockies during the colder months. With the high altitudes it can snow early and late season. You have to be aware of the weather all of the time.
