Well Ive read some of the posts in here, and I am discouraged. I am being transferred up there in two weeks time, and am having trouble finding rental houses. I looked at one that seemed to be a really nice house, with good rent price, but mapped against what you all call PCP, and found it is RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT.
I dont want to communte too long, I have two teenage daughters that will be in school, so I would like a good district.
I am moving from Albany GA, where crime is ridiculous, to what I thought was going to be a picturesque area. I'm originally from Clearfield, so it was nice to finally get back home.
Now, I need a home.
Does anyone have any advice to what section to look in for rental property? I cant buy just yet.
THanks!

We live in N. Scranton and my husbands commute is about 30 min. Check out Moscow, Elmhurst, Gouldsboro etc.

You might want to check out the availability of rental units in Wayne and Pike County. Pike could be a little too far? The Depot is on Route 423 that then it runs out of Monroe county into Wayne. There are some nice, small communities and I hear pretty good things about the school districts. You could check out the Newfoundland, Greentown and Lake Wallenpaupack areas. Do the Google Earth or MSNBC maps on the area.

Good thing you read here about about PCP. See everyone? We saved someone! I lived for awhile in Pocono Lake and it was pretty nice there. Not far from the depot yet far enough away from PCP. It was Arrowhead lakes and it is a nice development but people there do turn their noses up at full time renters. I worked in Wilkes-Barre and there were clients that lived in the area and commuted. They would car pool. Prob took them 45 min to an hour. The commute is fine as it is all straight driving-not sitting at lights. But the weather made for some treacherous driving in the winter. Think about getting a Jeep. Glad I did!

Number Five son works at Toby. His commute from West Wyoming is 40 +- minutes. He's a firefighter and because of shift demands, he can't carpool but he's been doing this for nine years so I guess it isn't too, too bad.

Would you qualify for base housing? I know there is some up there.

My father has been doing it for 8 years from Pittston and doesn't complain about the drive too often besides if 81 backs up.

Considering you have 2 teenage daughter's you definitely want to stay FAR FAR away from APCP...unless you want to expose them DIRECTLY to what your trying to get away from in GA...seriously do not go there...look a little more north as others have suggested here and you'll find better areas...good luck!!

I agree with all of the above posters. We are relatively new to the area, and our initial search was in the Poconos. Some of the first homes we saw were in Tobyhanna.

They looked nice on the internet, and they were reasonably priced, but when we saw Pocono Country Place we knew it was not for us.

Especially for HS students this would be a bad move.

This is a very beautiful area, and there is no need to be frightened in general. There are four seasons of activities that I am sure your daughters will enjoy - skiing, swimming, boating, water skiing, hiking, rafting, tubing you name it.

Many people work where you will work, but I do not know of anyone who lives right in Tobyhanna.
Best of luck in your search for a home! You came to the right place for information! These people were a great help to us when we were planning our move!

How about Pocono Farms? Is that still considered ghetto?
