I just sold my car to someone who is coming to pick it up tomorrow. I live in NW DC, but the car is registered in WV. She will be getting the title from me tomorrow (Monday) when she picks it up. Problem is she lives in Woodbridge and will not have an opportunity to go to the DMV until Tuesday morning.
My question is, would it be illegal for her to use my tags to get back to Woodbridge? I will have signed the car over to her, and she got insuarance for the car today. If this is not legal, what are her options? I do not care if she uses my tags for the journey home, as long as it is not breaking any kind of law.

You may sign it over to her but it is still in your name until she gets to DMV. It is illegal in Va and you're opening yourself up to a huge can of worms if she were to get into an accident or does something worse on the way home.

Can you take your plates and put an 'In Transit' sign in the back window for the purchaser to drive home with?

I can do the In Transit sign. I guess that would get me off the hook, but on her part, is it legal for her to do that?

How does that make it legal to drive? If it was on the back of a tow truck, then that would be fine.

This has come up on this forum before.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/north...bout-tags.html

I assume the buyer in Woodbridge will be getting Virginia plates. They can get a 3-day temporary tag from the Virginia DMV that is for the purpose of transporting a car under your circumstance.

It really is the safest way to do it, though the buyer may think it's an inconvenience.

EDIT: actually, it's not an inconvenience because a trip permit can be purchased online, and printed.

I believe if she already has Virginia plates that she can put them on the car and drive to Woodbridge -- and that assumes that the car has a Virginia inspection sticker.

If she does not/the car does not have a Virginia inspection sticker, I believe the legal thing to do is to have the car towed to Woodbridge.

If you mean if the buyer already has VA tags for a different car - that may work to get her home, but it's not legal.

I read OP's post to mean that the buyer has not been to the DMV to register the car and get tags yet.
