I wonder if the Northern Virginia banana trees attract black widows. And no, I'm not volunteering to find out!
That's a good neighborhood deterrant from keeping the kids from playing among them though!

Please look at the following link: Virginia Palm Trees
It is not out of the question that various species of palms can be successfully planted and grown in Virginia. I believe roughly the area of USDA zone 8b is the northernmost extent along the east coast where a palm variety will actually be naturally occurring although finding one would be an extremely rare event. I would think you would have to spend a lot of time looking around drier land in otherwise swampy areas in Virginia Beach.

I am from the tropics where we grow bananas in every house. So couldn't resist jumping in. Bananas do not grow on trees. They grow on plants that are closely related to the ginger, cala lily family. That said I have been wanting to grow a banana plant, of course in a container that I can bring it into my garage in winter, for some time now. Any idea where I can get the rhizomes around here? Even if it is the right variety it would need steady warmth for at least 9 months (the time it takes for a plant) to produce fruits. From where I come, we use almost all the parts of the plant in cooking, the fruit of course, the leaves, the flower, and even the stalk. So I 'm sure I can use it one way or the other.
