When I was watching the news yesterday afternoon, they said you could pick up 5, yes 5, sandbags. Five sandbags aren't even effective for a single door. I don't understand why they even wasted their time, and money, handing out 5 per household. It won't do a thing.

We've evacuated to the summer home on the Eastern Shore....mainly out of concern for our boat that is tied up there. Good thing school has closed because I was going to call out anyway.

I'm really worried about a storm surge up the Bay. That could destroy my boat and dock. The old girl is a mahogany 57 foot Chris Craft that has been in the family for a loooong time. My dad ordered her at the 1966 New York Boat Show. I can't imagine life without her.

We went to Crisfield today to top off the fuel tanks just in case. The Navy has ordered the ships at Norfolk out to sea as that is the safest place for a vessel, even in a hurricane. We might have to do the same thing only the sea would be the Chesapeake in our case. I don't relish the idea of bouncing around out there for a couple days...but if there's no other choice...UGGH.

A speargun or Hawaiian sling might be more useful. I wonder how good the fishing's gonna be from my roof.

Is that really a good idea? You might want to check with the Coast Guard before attempting it. There's a big difference between a several thousand ton steel warship at sea in a storm than a wooden powerboat. I grew up on boats and would never dream of doing something like that. Your life's worth a lot more than a boat.

Just curious...why can't you take the boat out of the water?

Because we local officials want to be seen doing "something" even if it's nothing. If they hadn't had sandbags they would have been crucified at the next three meetings.

As a note, MD has ordered the evacuation, both voluntary and mandatory, of Ocean City, waterfront Worcester County, Crisfield, Annapolis, St. Mary's County and the islands.

I know you guys are NoVA but talk of evacuation for you is premature. Except maybe Arlington. The Potomac is slated to have a storm surge at some point.

I wouldn't go hang out by the Old Town Alexandria waterfront.

Nor would I, but you know some dumbasses will have hurricane parties and get stranded or isolated or cut off from their IPhones.

There's a reason they have height markers up to 12 feet above river level etched into the corner of one of the buildings at King and Union.

I have had a guy swear by all that's holy that his house had never flooded until TS Isabel in 2003. Right in front of his house, where he parks his car, was (and still is) a "Flood Prone Area/High Tide Area" sign. He didn't have flood insurance, no mortgage.
