I can't remember the details, but I think that there were some type of restrictions placed on the commercial crabbers. Or something along those lines. Maybe some sort of tax?

Although you can certainly get AYCE crab legs in other areas. Just not around NoVa for some reason..

CBSH was unique because you could get AYCE on all types of seafood (scallops, steamed and fried shrimp, clams, deviled crab, even frogs legs) and choose different items on your reorders as long as they were the same or lower priced than your initial order. You can still get that sort of thing at buffets in other areas but I'm not aware of a place that serves you at your table like CBSH did.

Hadn't thought of that place in years. Fond memories of it. I was working in Manassas back then and our office use to go there for birthdays. Loved the fritters they served up first thing on the table.

Oh yes, the hush puppies were awesome. I've had some other places, but they've never been as good as Chesapeake Bay Seafood House. Does anyone know any places that have hush puppies that are as good or better?

My Grandmother. True southerner who could fry with the best of them. Her hush puppies were the best I ever had anywhere too include Chesapeake. She's almost 100 now so sadly she no longer cooks.

Hush puppies, yes, not fritters. I could make a whole meal of those. I've had some since, but never as good.

Remeber CBSH fondly, my father was in the USMC and stationed in D.C., we lived on Bolling AFB FROM 1977-1980. Friday nights at CBSH was a ritual. I really loved their frog legs and everything else as well. We had friends come visit and Mr. Charles loves boiled shrimp and said he had never been anywhere that he could get all he wanted. Dad and Mom took him and his wife there, left us kids at home, so not fair, and my dad said Charles ate about 23 bowls of the spiced shrimp. Best seafood restaurant I've ever eaten at and I've told many people about that place and I think some thought I was exaggerating. Fond, fond memories...
p.s. We moved back to Georgia and about ten years ago when I heard they had closed I almost cried.

Good memories! We used to go to the one at Loehmann's Plaza. A big table of a dozen or so loud Guamanians, and crab legs flying all over the place ... and I sat quietly enjoying my plate of hush puppies. (I wasn't a seafood eater as a child, but I was perfectly happy with the hushpuppies!!)

I remember eating at CBSH as a young child! I always ordered the baby shrimp and hushpuppies...during a momentary lapse of good judgement I tasted the frog legs my father ordered. Afterwards we would go for a spin on a carousel at a quiet little mall close by.
I also remember a place in Tyson Corner called Shakey's Pizza that was a good experience for children. Memories!

How about Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor? The Trough anyone?
LOOOOOOOVED Farrell's!! We'd go to the one at Springfield Mall for every.single.birthday!

Apparently Farrell's still exists in California. I wonder if it's still as good as it was back then. (Probably not. Nothing is as good as "back then")
