Hey all, I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I have to drive up to Vermont tomorrow night with a 5x8 utility trailer in tow. Are there any special rules or regulations? Can I still travel in the car lanes of the Jersey Turnpike or do I need to go in the truck lanes (I guess the signs may tell me....never paid attention because I never had to)? We've got a new EZPass to include the trailer so I have that covered...but that's about it. This is kind of a sudden trip. Thanks!

Towed a boat once, but that was years ago. Only restriction was @ propane tanks thru the various tunnels.
Good Luck!

Thanks. That's the only thing I could find as well. This is just a load of toilets, tub, lights, etc. for our future new home that's been under construction for a year and a half...it's getting to the home stretch. This is a super fast trip that I'd rather not make....but it's kind of a necessity. Thanks again!

We have a utility trailer. My husband said that he thinks in Virginia you aren't allowed to drive in the far left lane when you have one attached.

I'm been on the NJ Turnpike too many times to count, but I don't think there's any restrictions on small trailers like that, but I could be wrong.

But if you're towing a small trailer like that, with small wheels, I'd keep the speed down, so truck lanes might be better regardless.

Yep - I hear you on that one. I'm lamenting that it's going to take longer than usual to get up there! But - the point is getting there safely!

My husband drove our utility trailer back and forth from Vienna to Chapel Hill several times before we moved. He definitely drove slower than normal, and there are no tolls/toll lanes/truck lanes to contend with, but he didn't have issues. On the day we moved, he drove the trailer, and I drove the other car behind him. When we stopped at the rest areas, we took the truck lanes (not the car only lanes) because then you can pull into a big truck spot and pull forward to leave.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate. Please drive safely!

There are occasionally wind restrictions on some of the bridges on this route that may apply if it is windy, too.

Just wanted to give an update since you all were so helpful. Everything went well. Signs were well marked for restrictions in the left lane, etc. It was slick roads going up but not too bad coming back down. A trip that normally takes around 10 - 11 hours took 13.5 but the cargo arrived safe and sound! Unloaded it, had lunch, and drove back home. In total - a 31 hour trip.
