Hi,
I escaped from DC Metro in 2004 but find I'm being pulled back.

What is the commute like on 66 from Warrenton to Tysons now?
Could I also get comments on commute time from Manassas and Gainsville.

Also, going to Tysons from 66W, is it better to go up Chain Bridge through Oakton or go up 495 and come back in from the east?

Thanks NOVA commuting warriors.

66 inbound is awful. 123 North through Oakton/Vienna might be even worse. The Beltway, once you finally get on it, is a crap shoot. Options to explore? Get off 66 at Fair Oaks, then...

A. Follow 236-East thru Fairfax to left at top of hill onto Old Lee Highway. Around Fairfax Circle onto regular Lee Highway, 29/211-East. Follow for several miles into Falls Church. After crossing Route-7, pretty quick left onto Great Falls Street. Follow through McLean to 123-South. A fairly easy mile or so and you're there.

B. Follow 236-East only a little way to left on Jermantown Road. It turns into Blake Lane after you cross (clogged) Route-123. Continue a couple of miles to left on Lee Highway, then as in A above.

C. Follow 236-East through Fairfax and continue on 236 to two-lane left turn at Pickett Road by Fair City Mall. Cross Route-50 after a couple of miles, then almost immediate right onto Lee Highway at the IHOP and then as in A above.

YMMV on these. Conditions change by the half hour...maybe less...

So a Gainsville commute to Tysons leaving at 7:30 AM is 60 - 90 minutes excluding outlier days (1 to 5 times per month) that could make it 2 hours?

Am I way off base here?

When is the 66 widening work scheduled to finish? Will this provide any relief or will the traffic grow to fill the lanes?

Thanks.

If you absolutely, had to be on time; you would probably have to leave at 0700. If your job allows you to be a casual 15-30 minutes late, occasionally, you could leave at 0730.
Some of the construction delays have been hideous; even in the middle of the day. I don't know why VDOT can't do this at night, but it would make a heck of a lot more sense. I've seen some huge traffic jams in my life--grew up on the 395 corridor. But I-66 is just legendary, truly what nightmares are made of. Throw in the fact that 500K homes are now 400, and probably heading towards 269K; it's a losing situation.

What about from Ashburn / Leesburg on the toll road? Is that trip to Tysons better or equal to 66 from Gainsville / Manassas?

leesburg to Tysons is an hour most days leaving about 6:45am. (on rt7) If leaving around 7:30-8 it will probably take close to 90min. Evenings if you leave around 6pm it's about an hour, at 5pm it will be 90 minutes.

Ashburn will be about 15-20minutes faster esp if you take 267 (lots of housing in Ashburn backs up to 267 and you can quickly get on.
If you take rt 7 you're looking at about 10-15min faster.

It's not that bad (there are worse commutes) but I would think if you are going to do it for more than 2-3 years... I'd look at Herndon or possibly Cascades area of Sterling.

FWIW, there was a front-page Metro story in the Post today about parents scrambling to get home in time for Halloween, featuring a guy who lives in Gainesville and works in Tyson's. He said that it can take 2 hours, and that he basically only sees his kids on weekends.
He's taking today off....

EEK! That's potentially a two hour each way commute. PLEASE do yourself a favor and try to find a carpool buddy. That will shave almost an hour off that.

And my experience, when I worked in Tysons (I live in Manassas) until about 6 months ago, was that there was little difference in time to go up Chain Bridge versus hanging out on 66/495. 495 actually was a little "quicker" usually.

Welcome back to Northern Virginia!

Brian
