I think you'll be fine, but it does depend on how picky you're going to be about where you live. When I first moved to the area, I got an apartment in Manassas so I wouldn't have to have a roommate. If you want to live in a nice new apartment near a Metro or in a walkable social type area, that's obviously going to cost more than if you're fine with an older place a bit further from the social scene. But with your salary, I think you'll find you'll be fine. I started out here with only about half that salary, also no car payments, and only a very low student loan payment (just over $100/month), and I survived just fine. That was back in late 2004, but cost of living sure hasn't doubled in that time, while you'll be taking in about double the salary I had then.

The job is in Fairfax -- there are cheaper apartments, etc., around Fairfax.

The big question is -- how much of a barfly are you? If you want to be going out every weekend, maybe 1x during the week; or are really into music, shows, cultural stuff, etc., then you will want to be in Orange Line Arlington and have a roommate.

I'd pick somewhere in Ballston or Falls Church for the simple reason that I-66 gets pretty clogged up for reverse commuters east of Glebe Road.

You're welcome to move to DC as long as you're not a Pens or Steelers fan. Both groups are already over-represented in the market.
