This is a different brood (Brood 2) than the one your thinking of. I've never really encountered Brood 2 much around here. You're thinking of Brood X, which I lived through in Arlington in 1970 and 1987, and in Alexandria in 2004.

I remember them in 2004 which is why I was confused about all the cicada news now.

Northern Va is on a border line for two different broods. Check out that Washington Post map of which broods are in which parts of Nova and it will become clear.
