I have relatives coming for a visit in August (let's hope the water is restored to PG by then) and a friend suggested that they might enjoy National Harbor. If you've been there, what do you think?

Expensive. All of the restaurants (most of them local chains) are more expensive because it is a tourist trap. If the weather is nice, the views are lovely.

Personally, I much prefer Old Town, but National Harbor can be worth a visit. If the weather is good, I think it is worthwhile to take the water taxi from Old Town. You can see what NH has to offer and take the water taxi back when you're done.

On the suburban MD forum, here there are many long discussion threads about NH. The overpriced restaurants, the expensive parking, how the complex is walled-off from the community, etc. The childrens museum at this point is not worth seeing, until its expansion is completed in 2014. The dancing, colored fountains in the lobby of the Gaylord are fun, and the Awakening sculpture outdoors. The Gaylord is said to be the largest non-casino hotel on the entire East Coast.

Like mentioned above, it's fun to look at the Awakening statue and see the inside of the Gaylord hotel, but that takes only about 20 minutes. Other than that, all there is to do is shop. But sometimes they have special events like boat shows, Beatlesfest, Elvis performers, etc.

I agree with the poster above who suggested going to Old Town and taking the water taxi.

However, if your guests are in good physical condition, you might consider renting bikes in Old Town, pedaling down Washington Street and then over the Wilson Bridge to National Harbor. There are some viewing areas on the Bridge where you can see the Capitol and the Washington monument.

There's really nothing to do at the National Harbor unless there's some kind of event going on, imo.

Thanks to all (some of whom I couldn't rep until I spread more around)!

Thanks also to Alexicon for assuming that *I* would not be the one who might be unable to handle that bike trip. :-)
