Any one else live in an area where there is a deafening sound of crickets or cicadas at night? We were hoping to do a kid's night camp out for the neighborhood but the sound is deafening. Camp sites don't have this as bad. Thoughts?

We used to call them back-to-school bugs. I've been out of school for almost 40 years! The sound still sends a shiver down my spine.

In defense of the OP, crickets and cicadas can generate over 90 decibels. That can be very loud if you're close to them. Noise levels drop off pretty quickly with distance. I wouldn't call it deafening, but I have a lot of loud crickets and cicadas. I occasionally get some other noises like some shrieking from foxes and calls from owls.

I like hearing those things. those are the sounds of nature and I think (hope?) they indicate that my house is in something resembling a healthy ecosystem. I'd be more concerned if I didn't hear plenty of insects and other life at night. I'd much rather hear crickets than noises generated by people.

Thanks for all the feedback. We are on outside of town and about 2+ acres of the property are woods so I suppose we have a lot of critters out there. Some nights are really loud; so I stand behind my description of "deafening".

I agree with the OP, but I've discovered that while they are loud around bedtime, 10:30 or so, they quiet at a certain point in the night. I've been up at 1 or 2 and it's totally silent.

I've got the "noise" going on right now, but I agree with reebo that when I happen to wake up in the middle of the night, it's pretty quiet.

I'm not the OP, but we camped out in our back yard in Oakton (backs to the woods) and the sound was deafening. We woke up at around 2 am to see the Perseids and the deafening sound was still there so I don't know what time it goes silent. When I woke up at 6:30 am, that sound had stopped, but the birds were filling in this time! :-) This is why I love Oakton!!!
