I parked my car near my school, next to a driveway. It was like few feets, i wasn't blocking the driveway, but i got a ticket. "blocking or within 10 feet". i want to contest the ticket. what are the chances of me winning? if i lose, do i pay additional fee?
here's the picture.

But you are within 10 feet!

That must have been one angry home-owner or a cop having a bad day!

Are you sure the ticket was for blocking a driveway? Was there a fire hydrant nearby? That is what normally requires curb clearance.

Ha. Must be a suburb thing. When in the 'burbs, I try to park a good distance from driveways, as a courtesy and to not get swiped by a car, but sometimes its unavoidable. Glad I never got a ticket.

I wonder if they have such a rule in DC, NYC, etc.

I do not think you will win. Students are always trying to avoid paying parking lot fees by parking on neighboring streets. Obviously, no one likes this and it causes some problems. Therefore, there is very strict enforcement of parking rules, which seem mainly to be in place just to keep students from parking there. You are exactly the person they are trying to catch, so I doubt you will find any sympathy in court.

You won't have to pay an additional fee if you lose, that would just be cruel. Might help if you actually measured that distance, pic is good though. Real tears help too.

Wow, that's considered poor etiquette in Alexandria, to waste that available space.

If the distance is under 10 feet, what's your proposed defense?

Is this no parking within 10 feet of a driveway thing some Va law I'm not aware of? People park in front of their own houses that close to their own driveways all the time!

I have contested tickets in Fairfax County, lost, and wound up paying fees higher than if I had just paid the ticket. That was years ago and I was angry that I didn't understand that was possible. I don't know whether that may have changed, but you may want to inquire directly with the court.

I got a ticket for that 30 years ago. It was because I was too close to the corner, not the driveway. Where's the pic of the whole scene? However, if it was the driveway, as shown, that the ticket is for, then I think it's nonsense.

my defense is that
that i did not know there was such law that says i can't park in 10 feet. i live in arlington, never heard of something like that, or anyone getting ticket for parking close to driveway.
besides, when i parked there was plenty of space behind me, if i knew about this law, i would've parked further.
