Since:

a) I've been living here continuously since 1951.

b) I could pack up tomorrow and move anywhere on the planet without the slightest concern for gainful employment.

So, I too, must be an aberration, in that I'm happy here. The area is definitely not what it once was...but it still suits me fine.

Hmmm...what happened to you today? I can be fairly miserable and cynical, but in general, I'm very happy here as well as not noticing people around me be miserable. I think you need to look at yourself. When everyone around you is bothering you, you have to start to ask: Maybe it's me?

Wow, is the Jimmycrapcorn Christmas Special on already?

[Lest I be accused of obscurity, Jimmycrapcorn was a one-time CD poster who started a similar thread that went on for four years and 40 pages before Tone509 finally pulled the plug on it in 2012.]

Sounds like a thread in the Indianapolis forum where one guy kept bashing the city for hosting the super bowl and said it was bad for the city. I can't imagine taking that position on any level. Kentucky forum has an angry guy living in California that posts a new thread anytime he finds an article or study slamming the state. At least the OP could have quoted a study done showing that post sequestration the area is less robust and thus less discretionary money floating around but wait, with gas prices plummeting, we have more money available...

I'm pretty happy. Went to a nice holiday market on the plaza this past weekend, had some gluwein, schnitzel with the wife. I think also you can't attribute one mentality to an area of 5 million plus people, living in completely different regions, lifestyles, etc. I have about as much in common with someone from Fredericksburg or Bethesda or Bowie as I would with someone from Phoenix other than possibly what we do for a job.

For the record, I don't give a damn about "status" as you put it, and I don't think I know anyone who does either. Sounds like you need a new circle of people around you more than anything.

Ironic, considering you think outside of work we are all the same, when all indications in this area are, other than the type of work, we're all different (having come from the four corners of the world).

...How can you speak for a whole region of more than a million people, do you know everyone in NoVa. I'm not miserable at all, speak for yourself or say less.
