I'll give you an example of what I got caught in earlier this week while running errands. I left Merrifield (US 29) at 5:00 p.m. and needed to go to a store in Centerville (US 50) that closed at 6:00 p.m. I didn't make it. The Google map link below indicates that the trip is 12 miles and should take 21 minutes. It took me exactly 60 minutes!

I won't discount what JfromReston said. All the roads are pretty clogged, particularly now with the holidays. Merrifield is getting to be a mini-Tysons (in terms of traffic). If I want to go shopping at Mosiac, I wait until 7 or 7:30 p.m. to leave my condo in Tysons.

I used to live in Reston, while working a job in McLean. I took the toll road every day. Some co-workers took Leesburg Pike/Route 7. My only hesitation with the toll road now is the cost, which has increased steadily since I last used it on a daily basis (in 2009). I finally moved into Tysons, and really enjoyed being close to work.

My suggestion is to find a place close to work that also fits within your budget. Most people select Reston for the schools, family environment, etc. If this isn't you -- then think carefully about your commute time and if it is worth it.

OP,

I know it's probably not desirable, but you will find rooms in houses or a roommate to get a 2BR to split the cost with the budget you have now, in Reston and even in McLean.

Welcome to the area!
