I will be taking a position in Reston, VA and am trying to find out the best place to move my family to. I have a Wife a couple of kids, so night life, restaurants etc are not a priority for me. Here are some of my guidelines:

1. Rent around $2k (needs to be at least a 3 bedroom, no exception)
2. Safe, family area
3. Decent public school / private schools
4. Commute > or = 1 hour
5. Need a place with a yard

Any information would be great! Information on housing websites I should be viewing would help as well!

If none of these are feasible, then I cannot accept the position.

Welcome to Reston!

Your budget will allow you the choice of many townhouses right in Reston - save time commuting and spend more time with the kids! This option fits #1-4 to a tee, but will most likely require you to compromise on #5. The good news is that Reston was designed to have common areas for all to enjoy. The links below will give you details about the 15 swimming pools, tons of tennis courts, 100+ acres of protected open space, and numerous "tot lots" (kids playgrounds), 50+ miles of trails and 4 lakes.

I'm assuming you mean that you want a commute of 1 hour or less?

I agree that Reston itself would be a good place to start looking. You could also look at zip code 20171, but like Reston, you'd likely have to compromise on the yard (you might get a small yard, but nothing big).

Oh wow, that is some great news! I'm fine with a small yard, just need a small place for a BBQ and some space for the kids to play. I'm glad to hear that there are plenty of common areas as well as child specific ones! Thank you for the help!
