What is the nightlife like in the NoVa/DC area? I'm not looking for New York style clubs, but are there decent bars open till 2-3am? How about the cost of living in general. In NJ there's no tax on clothing or food, is that the case in VA?
2 am, yes. I believe that is the latest that bars in VA can stay open. 3 am is last call in DC - many people in VA go into DC for bars and nightlife.

There are taxes on both clothing and food in VA. Grocery taxes are fairly low/negligible. Clothing taxes are the going sales tax rate.

I would think that the cost of living in NoVA is comparable to many areas of NJ.

I think I am going to do like I said in my original post, head down for a weekend at the end of this month and just walk/drive around an get to know the area. It's really the only way to find out if I like it or not. I'm assuming that the city will be like Newark without the crime. They're of similar size and population density.

Another question, how is street parking? Parallel parking is a way of life where I currently live. I routinely have to park a Ram 2500 crew cab in tight spaces up here.

If you're referring to Old Town as the "city", then it's much smaller than Newark. Street parking in Alexandria is relatively easy. Arlington is a little tougher. DC is much tougher.

So I've been on craigslist an other sites. Apartments seem to all go for around $1200-1400 for a 1 bedroom. Are there any "good" communities to live in that you guys could recommend in that price range. I was checking out this Braddock Lee place but it's got positive an negative reviews. A friend of mine lives in another community but I'm not sure of the name.

If you're going to keep saying "IN New York, blah blah blah" about everything, then just do us all a favor and stay in NJ. IF you like NYC, then STAY THERE. DC is not NYC. We already have several NJ transplants who drive like bats out of hell and otherwise extremely obnoxious. You should do more research about the kinds of people who live and thrive in DC. Hint: They have manners. This is not a gangster's paradise. This is a city full of nerds and do-gooders. Do you really think you're going to fit in here if you want to drive your muscle cars at 95 MPH at all times and snort your drugs at 3 am in da club? Sorry, no...

You can pump your own gas in NoVa. That might be the biggest day-to-day difference, aside from the taxes. Oh, and there are fewer Italians here and more Asians. The pace of life is a little slower, and the temperatures are a little higher. But mostly, North Jersey and Northern Virginia are quite a lot alike.

The OP is trying to get a feel for what things are like here by giving examples of what he/she is used to in New Jersey.

If someone lives with their mother and owns multiple cars, it would seem obvious they could sell 2 cars and afford to live alone.... Maybe it's just having dated mama's boys that I get irked by them.

So someone who lives with their mom so they can drive numerous cars (therefore, they probably love speeding and driving recklessly) wants to move to DC to party in clubs past 2 am, and then drive (drunk & high) recklessly home to Alexandria?

NO THANK YOU. Stay in NYC or go to Miami if you want the party lifestyle. You aren't going to fit in here in DC.
