Is living in Arlington similar to DC?
It seems similar and I am trying to find a possible place to relocate.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

It depends on what part of DC and what part of Arlington.

What are you looking for? City life DC wins. For family it depends on your budget but the commute from DC to McClean may not be the best.

For the DC prices for good single family homes it will be expensive so maybe live in McClean or Falls Church?

I lived in Arlington (Clarendon, Ballston, and Rosslyn) before I lived in NW DC. While I enjoyed Arlington at the time, it was not like living in a city, really, and after I moved to DC I found DC much more to my liking. I'm talking about sense of urban environment and the energy level I felt (I like urban environments). I would not say that living in Arlington gives you quite the same feeling as living in DC. But what is it you're looking for?

Income taxes are lower in Virginia, your commute to McLean will likely be much better from Arlington than DC (unless you chose someplace in South Arlington).

I live in Arlington myself and like it overall. I would move to SW DC and/or Capitol Hill South if I was working in DC instead of Fairfax and could afford it. Working in VA I would stick with Ballston-Rosslyn corridor in Arlington.

If you can afford rent in Arlington, you can afford it in Tysons....living in DC would be cool, and I too would prefer it over Arlington, but in your situation my vote is for Tysons....could possibly go carless and still get around well. Streets are safe over there, and some good shopping and dining...you really have to watch your back in DC, but if you are a contractor, it is likely that in the future you will have a chance to live work in DC. What part of California are you used to?

Default Shirlington?

I've lived in DC and Pentagon Row. Taxes are better in VA. Traffic getting out of DC in the morning may be a challenge as HOV lanes are not in effect in that direction, nor going east during the early evening. May wish to try Shirlington which I think is in Arlington

Property taxes are lower in DC, but income taxes are worse. I was surprised to see DC on a list of the five States with the lowest property taxes.
