The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Board of Directors voted Wednesday (Nov. 14) to increase rates on the Dulles Toll Road for the first time since 2014.

The hike will raise the toll from $2.50 to $3.25 at the main toll plaza and from $1 to $1.50 on ramps, starting in January. The rate increases are necessary to fund the Silver Line extension project and improvements on the Dulles Toll Road, according to the MWAA.

The next general Dulles Toll Road rate increase is expected in 2023, when tolls are planned to jump to $4 at the mainline plaza and $2 at ramps. Ramp tolls are also charged at the entrance and exit to the privately-owned Dulles Greenway.

Looks like by 2023 it will cost $6 to go one way on the toll road. And the traffic on the Dulles toll road is terrible. That's something individuals need to take into account when thinking about purchasing house in this area. I am seriously thinking of moving closer in to DC, as much as I like Reston.

For me, since I live in Arlington, there are a lot of potential jobs in Herndon/Reston that are gonna be off my list of possibilities. Of course with Amazon moving to Crystal City I may be forced out of the area sooner rather than later.

And to think the tolls were to end once the funds necessary to build the toll road had been collected.

I use to live in Chantilly and work in McLean. On the morning commute I would exit the toll road at Rt 7 West and go in the back way. At that time there was no toll to head west on 7. Wonder if that is still true. Glad I retired and moved out of the area.
