Leesburg is a commuter suburb (exurb!) to DC that was once centered around an old town center, but now consists primarily of new construction subdivisions (McMansions and jumbo townhouses). The old town center is charming and walkable, has coffee shops, etc., but it definitely has a more new suburban money meets dying farm culture vibe. A more hip, eclectic area that sounds more like what you are looking for would be Arlington (described by one of the posters above). Arlington is a neighborhood just outside DC that has a nice mix of urban/suburban culture and diversity. Plus, it has more older houses that give the town more charm and more "walkability" in the neighborhoods. The downside is that it is much more expensive than Leesburg.

My husband took a job in Manassas...can someone tell me what the commute from Leesburg to Manassas would be like? I was thinking since he would be heading South, it wouldn't be as bad...any advice?

Why do you want to live in another city & county? Work in Manassas and live in Gainesville or Bristow.

I LOVE downtown Leesburg with its beautiful old houses, good restaurants, and fun stores to browse. I've lived out her for 6 months and have yet to go to the Outlet malls! I like the downtown much more.

Yes, it is totally safe.

The commute to Ashburn and Dulles is fine, 30 minutes or less. Commute to DC, not so good, well over and hour.

Normie,
Your pictures are awesome! I see you capture my favorite restaurant, Lightfoot. I love those blocks of Leesburg. Thank you for posting those pictures.

The only times we've driven to Manasses from Leesburg were on weekends and even without much traffic, it seemed like a long commute. Its easily an hour plus, without too much traffic. Do you guys already live in Leesburg?

Leesburg to manassas during rush hour would not be a fun commute. (MOST traffic out of Leesburg runs south because there isn't a job market north)

As Heather said I'd check out Gainsville/Bristow area.

Thanks so much for the advice...we are from Richmond and I thought that Leesburg seemed most like our neighborhood now.

Leesburg might be like what you have now, but it's nowhere close to Manassas. I bet you could find what you want in Manassas. That's an old town too.
