Hi, I am in my early twenties. My husband will be graduating college in May and has a job offer in Alexandria, Virginia. Neither one of us know much about the town, but we have heard and read many positive things about it so we are very excited. I am interested in volunteering if we move there. What places there offer volunteer work? I am pretty much open to anything because I have many interests. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

When I was in high school, I volunteered every weekend at Alexandria Hospital. It's a small community hospital on Seminary Road. Alexandria City is a great place--I work in Old Town and love it. There are so many restaurants, historic streets to stroll down and great views of the Potomac and the planes landing/taking off at National Airport. It's much more fun to live in the Alexandria City portion (inside the Beltway) versus the more suburban Fairfax County portion. Just be sure to avoid some corridors like the Richmond Hwy as it is not as nice. Let us know where you are moving from--if it is from the Midwest, you will likely be in for culture shock. But either way, best of luck to you--May is a wonderful time to come here too!

Whoa....so this will be definitely culture shock. That's not a bad thing at all, but it is something definitely to be aware of. The TriCities, Gatlinburg, Knoxville will feel very far away when you are here. Good luck with the move.

Do you know your new address? If so, enter the zip code to find lots of volunteer opportunities

Alexandria Volunteer Bureau - Home

If you don't know your new zip code, then pick "Surrounding Area" from the drop down menu rather than a zip code. There are literally thousands of opportunities.

Congratulations on your positive attitude. With that, you should be very happy here. Or anywhere you go.

Yes, I am prepared to face some culture shock. I am nervous, but excited at the same time. My husband has already visited Alexandria since he had to go there for his job interview. He said he can't wait for me to see it.

Thanks for the reply ersatz. No, I don't know where exactly we will be living yet. I will definitely check out the Volunteer Bureau. Currently, I have been working in retail to get my husband through college. When he graduates and we move, I want to do something else. I definitely don't want to sit at home all day. Since I don't know what to do yet, I think volunteering would be the best place to start. I have also considered going back to school. I just can't decide what I want to do since I am interested is so many things. There are just so many options!
