I'm new to NOVA and would like to volunteer in Alexandria. Any suggestions on where to start?

Your local chamber of commerce probably has a list of all sorts of opportunities near you. Pick something that appeals, it really does depend on your particular interest and abilities. I used to do Recording For The Blind (reading textbooks for blind college students). But that's not for everyone, it takes a bit of training and a major commitment.

My idea of a fun volunteer activity is to help out at a museum. Someday I'd like to be a docent at the Air and Space Museum. Another thing I did once that I can recommend is putting flags on the graves at Arlington for memorial day. No training needed, you just have to show up.

The Alexandria Volunteer Bureau is located in Del Ray. They should be able to provide a lot of opportunities.

You should also try volunteermatch.org and idealist.org. TONS of listings depending on your cause. PM me if you want any specific suggestions.
