My husband will be working in Old Town Alexandria. We have a 6 year old with moderate-mild autism and a 4 year old who will be GT (of course). Where would be the most convenient, safe, family-friendly community with SF homes under 800,000?

We've just begun our search and the school information is mind-boggling.

I would suggest contacting the school systems in Alexandria City and Fairfax County to find out which schools have programs that would suit your child's needs. Once you have that narrowed down then we can recommend some neighborhoods near those schools with a reasonable commute.

Also, don't over look Arlington County, whose school system is usually ranked far above that of Alexandria. School systems take different approaches with special needs students, so it's worth doing the research to find the approach that will best work for your family. I know that in Fairfax County, there were kids with Asperger's in my son's regular class, but that children with more profound autistic disabilities attended a special center at a nearby elementary school.

Vienna. Good schools for both kids.
