Traffic really is the worst thing about the DC metro area. It's bad everywhere, but 95 south is by far the worst. I swear, no matter when I travel on that road, weekdays or weekends, it is ALWAYS jammed up.

We go out that way quite a bit on the weekends but this was the first time we had ever encountered it where it was stop and go. We had previously ran into more stop and go when we used 66. You are right though traffic is really bad, I am dreading any snow, I think the drivers are bad I can only imagine when you add snow into the mix

Nah -- Those Drivers are the ones that have driven themselves off the road and they are down in a ditch.

Why does everyone choose that shift, and not the later one? In western Loudoun traffic is VERY heavy between 3:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon. After 6:00, it's a piece of cake, everyone is already home. I have to wonder why no one goes in late and stays late? Why does everyone choose the early commute? I

If snow is predicted, you dh should plan on staying home. Any other choice could mean many hours on the road. If he must commute, make sure that he has a full tank of gas. Although it is funny to see all the SUVs stuck in the ditches. Apparently their drivers don't realize that even 4 wheel drive vehicles can skid off an icy road.

Good advice, especially for the first storm. For some reason it takes us a storm or two to remember our driving skills. By January it's no big deal, but in early December people drive like they've never seen snow before.

Don't forget that you can bailout on Route 1. I've seen traffic hung up on the highway, while route 1 is smooth sailing. Even with the traffic lights, at least it feels better to be actually moving for more than 1 second intervals.

This doesn't seem to hold true for the 95 south commuters. Plus if I went in late, there would be no parking spaces left in our garage. It's first come first serve and usually fills up by 7:30 a.m.

Young children, maybe? My older son's daycare closes at 6:00, and the baby really needs to be in bed by 7:00. Even once the kids are in school, I imagine they'll need us to be on-hand for rides in the afternoons and early evenings.

My husband doesn't have much leeway on his hours, he has to be in no later than 8, but can go in as early as 6. His job is round the clock so there is always something going on out in the field.

Defintely agree. When my friends want me to come down to Prince William County (Dumfries, Manassas) to hang out. I need AT LEAST one hour of travel time, ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

95 South is just straight up garbage. I won't miss it at all. I look forward to trading I-395/95 in Virginia for I-65/31W in Louisville.
