I'm heading down to the hampton roads area sometime tomorrow. I can leave pretty much anytime during the day. I'm sure it will be busy all day, but is there a "best" time for me to go through 395/95 S leaving from alexandria? Is it worth it to wait until 1pm so i can get on the hov lanes? thanks!

I just got home from work. 95 South was a parking lot from Springfield and points south. And I do mean parking lot. Those people weren't moving. I sailed past them in the HOV at around 2:00 p.m. but I would not have wanted to have to exit at some point south.

I would recommend that you get a VERY early morning start. Other than that, yes, wait for HOV to open. It should probably open before 1:00 p.m.

I'm a bit nervous as I have to go to work tomorrow but from 6-9 a.m. I am actually worried about 95 south at 9AM.

My advice is to leave as early as possible. I had a trip from Alexandria to chesapeake take from 1:30 pm to 7pm on 95S. Early morning preferably but early!

I left Tysons one year at 1:00 going S on 95. By 3:45, I finally reached Fredericksburg. At 8:30, I got to Raleigh (usually a 4-hour trip).

Thanks for the responses. I think I will try to leave sometime in the morning if it looks okay. It's normally a less than 3 hour trip, so hopefully I won't be in the car the whole day!

FYI--- I got this info off the vdot site for the HOV lanes for this weekend:
The I-95/I-395 HOV lanes will run southbound from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24. The lanes will run northbound from 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24 until 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28. There will be no HOV restrictions on Friday, Dec. 25.

95-South from Springfield is brutal even on normal days during non-rush hours. Definitely agree that the earlier you leave tomorrow, the better.

Is it only bad to Fredericksburg? We are planning on going to Williamsburg for the day. We can take back roads from Stafford to get past Rt. 3.

So I ended up leaving around 9:30 and made it in 3 hours. Overall it was smooth sailing. Hope everyone else has safe travels!

Just heard on the radio it's stop and go from DC to Fredericksburg - about 40 miles. Good luck to anyone who hasn't left yet!

Out of curiousity, which part of HR were you trying to get to? Hampton to Alexandria always took 3 1/2 hours.
