I have accepted a new job in Alexandria starting in June. I currently live in the midwest and don't know a whole lot about the area. Due to the current housing market, I expect to have damaged credit and/or no down payment by the time we get rid of our current house so when we move we will need a rental. My new job has a performance bonus (though I don't know what I have to do to earn it yet) so I want a short enough commute that I can spend more time in the office to maximize my bonus. An ideal commute is 30 minutes by car or 45 by train.

So, we are looking for a rental as cheap as possible to save more money and get back into a house as soon as possible. The rental budget is $1500-3000 per month but the lower we are the better because it is only a temporary thing for a year or two and the less I spend on housing the more I can save for the down payment. We have no kids but we do have 2 dogs. It would be really really nice to have somewhere with at least a small fenced in area for the dogs.

Can anyone help me figure out where we should be looking for a rental?

I suppose you are looking for a rental house instead of apartment because of the dogs.

If I were working in Alexandria and wanted someplace close to work that was to be temporary, and I wanted to save as much as possible so I could earn for a future better home, and I didn't want an apartment, I would look at the following areas:

Virginia Hills
Rose Hill
The subdivisions along Franconia Rd between Telegraph Rd and Rose Hill Dr.
Gunston/Beacon Hill
The duplexes around North Kings Hwy

Good luck and welcome to Virginia.
