I get all this, but what I have a hard time understanding is why would you drive an elementary school child when there is clearly a bus in your neighborhood and the bus comes at 8:30 and the earliest you can drop your kids at ES is 8:50. This causes a huge line of cars trying to get into the neighborhood where the school is located that backs up to a main artery. I just don't get it.

But suppose you lived just inside the "walk" boundaries for that school -- would you require her to schlep all that gear for 1.5 or 2 miles? Both in the morning and the afternoon?
