I have the feeling late-September the water may already be cold. I don't know though. I do know I went to Assateague on July 4 last year and the water was still cold. The warm-water season is not very long in the Notheast.

But I guess it also depends on everyone's definition of cold.

Hilton Head in South Carolina. Not exactly a short drive--more like 10 hrs--but you can't beat the beach. Very wide and hard packed enough where the tide has retreated to ride the popular cruising bikes rented there. Bike paths all over the island. Plenty places to eat. Golf. Short on nightclubs, which don't matter to you anyway. Savannah is any easy drive for an enjoyable day trip.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't really mind the distance, I love to drive and consider anything within a 12 hour drive doable. So if the beach in Hilton Head is nicer than Outer Banks, I would have no issues getting there.
