HPU is like a little sister to UH. Its geared towards international studies, HENCE why you'll find international students. If you plan on getting a degree and work/establish a career here, I'd invest in UH over HPU. Its respected as more like a junior college like Heald or Phoenix. As for how HPU is respected in the US mainland I wouldn't know, depends on the degree and what type of accreditation your major or career requires.
Unless you are studying in a international related major, I wouldn't understand why you would relocate here and stop short of going to UH. If you want to meet and get integrated into the community, lifestyle, and "Hawaii experience" you'd get to meet more local people and US maindlanders at UH. If meeting and making International friends is ideal then HPU would fit. But to me, born, raised, live, graduated from UH, work here - HPU always seemed like some weird small international school stuck in such weird places like downtown or out near the Pali and it would appear weird for someone to go to school there unless you come from Europe or Africa. Thats why you get the "oh" response.

Even if you want to relocate from the mainland US, if you're from one of several western states, you can pay in-state hawaii tuition + 50% through the WUE program, which is a lot cheaper than the out-of-state rate and a whole lot cheaper than HPU.
