Hi, I have a quick question about the commute and parking. So if I were to live 4-5 miles away from downtown and drive into downtown, do you have to pay to park downtown(work would be near Bishop and Merchant)?

Also, Can you guys recommend some neighborhoods where I could live that would be reasonably safe area? I was told to look into punchbowl area and Kalihi.

Parking downtown is very expensive - you'd be better off taking the bus.

What is your budget - living downtown is safe or you can walk to work from parts of the Ala Moana area (zip 96814)

You might like the date st / kapahulu area. I used to live over there and enjoyed the convenience. You can catch the but on Waialae/King st to just about anywhere. The safeway center is right there for all of your shopping needs, the entire street (kapahulu) is lined with restaurants, bars and shops, and you are an easy bike ride / 15 minute walk from the University area, Kapiolani Park, Waikiki, and Kaimuki. Housing prices aren't too bad over there either and when you do want to drive it is a quick hop to get on the H1.

You have to deal with peoples garbage on the curb pretty much constantly and break ins here and there, but it is Honolulu... that is just par for the course when you live in town. It isn't any better downtown.

like what is very expensive? I am from Chicago and its $35/day to park. I was just curious because the guy said he drove 4 miles.

I am looking for area maybe just outside city where I can possibly have street parking when home with easy access to downtown. 15-30min commute is not a problem.

Some are as high as $64/day some are closer to $20/day but I imagine they fill up quickly.

This link will take you to rates for every downtown garage and its rates as of 2010. so figure parking could be higher now.

I would avoid Kalihi except for the Alewa Hieghts side. Some pretty rough areas in Kalihi.

UH Grad, You're are right on. Thank you for that great suggestion. Any other areas similar to this you can recommend? It looks like there aren't much street parking near here?

Thanks everyone. kapahulu is similar to what I am looking for. Also, I do not mind being away a bit more further than kapahulu. If you can suggest other areas similar to kapahulu, that would be great as well. Thanks again.

Out of the various areas I lived on Oahu, Kapahulu was BY FAR my favorite spot. It was so convenient to everything. I walked to Safeway. I walked or rode my bike down to Waikiki. I worked over by Ala Moana and that's pretty much the only time I used my car... and because I parked at the mall for free. If you're working in downtown, I'd highly recommend taking The Bus... that's what my roommate did.

I also lived in the Moiiliili area near the Star Market on King Street. That had similar but not nearly as many amenities as Kapahulu.
