Hi...Im looking for some friendly advice. I don't expect people to throw out their secret spots but Im strictly catch and release so you don't have to worry about me draining a resource.

Im into Largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing and managed to find some good spots mainly in a stream below Nuuanu Reservoir. Ive tried Lake Wilson as well but without much luck.

So on to my question....are there any other streams or farm ponds / lakes that might be good fishing for these species?

Also, is there a boat or canoe renter at Lake Wilson? I think thats the only way to fish that lake as I bank fished last time without much luck.

Mahalo!

There aren't any other freshwater fishing spots other than Nuuanu and Lake Wilson that I know about. There is Wailoa river on the Big Island, but I'm not sure how well those species of fish are represented in Wailoa.

Why are you trying to fish for mainland fish? If you are doing catch and release, the o'io are fun to catch. They aren't that tasty, though.

I am interested in starting a freshwater fish farm in Oahu - mainly catfish and tilapia. Which are the ideal water bodies from which freshwater can be withdrawn. I plan to use concrete water tanks with flowthrough system

In order to withdraw water from any lake or waterway in Hawai'i you will require a permit. I'd start by talking to these guys...

State Water Withdrawal Regulations

Most people I know grow tilapia in big tanks in their back yards. They then run the water through flat containers which have styrofoam flats floating with pukas for small plant pots and they grow plants with the fish's wastes as fertilizer. Called "aquaponics" around here. I've seen some fairly sizeable systems, but they were still not all that big.

How big of a system were you planning?

There aren't that many sources of freshwater on Oahu other than wells. Lake Wilson as mentioned, some streams around Nuuanu and that's about it. If you were planning on using stream water, you may want to make sure the stream runs year round, not all do.

If you're planning a big operation, I'm not sure what permits you'd need. For the smaller operations, folks fill their tanks with either rainwater or County water and they usually get their fish from other folks who have them. Some folks fly the original stock in from the mainland.
