I suspect you have inadverdantly stumbled upon the actual reason for the high costs for admission to the museum.. Large, older building, lots of open interior space, the heating bill must be a deal breaker.. But don't they have LNG online in Honolulu??? Maybe it is electric heating that is costing the museum so much? Perhaps someone more knowledgeable in such matters will chime in. I'm out of my depth here, and normally I'm pretty deep in it..
I grew up in Chicago - and the Field Museum is world class, and that costs $15. The Chicago Art Institue, $18. Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, $15.
Looks like the Field Museum's bottom line is in trouble, and admission may be going up.

At $17.95 it just doesn't seem right.
Yikes. I guess it has been a long time since I went to a museum. As I remember it, museum admission was free.
I just checked and a very nice private museum locally is $12, but that includes live shows. $12 here probably equates to $30 in Hawaii, so maybe the Bishops museum is cheap.
Kama‘āina rate $10.95, Seniors $8.95 ... doesn't seem out of line at all to me.
