I'm potentially booking a plane ticket from LA that has an overnight stay required. I would arrive at Oahu around 1pm and catch the flight the next day at 11am.
Does it sound like a good idea? I want to fly Hawaiian bc it's cheap and I've never been to Hawaii before so I wouldn't mind stepping a foot in the state...That said, does it sound plausible to stay at a hostel or a motel for ~$50 and afford transportation to and from the airport? Any people with experience recommend any cheap places?
I think for about $25.00 round trip you can take the SpeediShuttle from the airport to Waikiki. I think it would be kind of fun to spend the afternoon and evening in Honolulu.
This place has 17 small, private rooms each with a single bed and private bathroom and shower. It is located between lobbies five and six at Honolulu International Airport main terminal. Only one person can stay in each room.
Shower facilities can be rented separately, and you can even arrange a two hour nap. Reservations taken for overnight stays.

Thought I had seen this before where you can rent a place to sleep at the airport, don't know how much it is or if they still have it or not.
Airport Mini Hotel
As the airport FAQ details, this facility is no longer in operation.
With 22 hours on the ground you could certainly have a little fun. Why not? In the past I've made the most of such layovers all over the map. I used one such opportunity to meet a Facebook friend in Seattle for dinner at a fave Tom Douglas restaurant, and then catch a great late set at Jazz Alley, then a killer breakfast at Pike Place Market before heading back to the airport. But you won't find a bunk and shower in Honolulu for $50 unless you go the hostel route.
My take (from the OP) is the reason for the layover is because it is a cheaper flight that way. So, spending $$$ on hotels, etc, would eat in to the profits from the discount of an inconvenient flight.
Sooo....one way to look at it is that by taking a flight with a day layover, money could be saved. That money could then be used for a fun-filled day/night in Waikiki.
IF you want to spend time in Waikiki instead of taking a more convenient flight.
