You best bet is to try to get some on base housing, if on base isn't an option Ewa and Mililana are nice places. I don't have any children so I can't say to much about the schools but the areas are nice. As long as the where ever you move has a decent amount a windows it isn't to bad living there without A/C. I grew up in Texas and would never have thought about living some where without A/C. But, the trade winds keep it pretty cool as long as you have good air flow. Best of luck finding a place. You can try AHRN but I never had to much luck with them, I preferred a webiste called Padmapper.

Unfortunately Padmapper hasn't been nearly as useful since last June, when they took down all the Craig's List listings due to a cease & desist letter from CL.

Bye Bye Craigslist :-(

The blog in update 3 says he's bringing back craigslist ads. Was that not true?

When I saw the suggestion, I'd never heard of padmapper so I looked. Fantastic! I did, btw, see a CL ad on there so...

We don't want to pay any more than $3000 for rent as we have to factor in the high electric bill too. A single family home with at least 3 bedrooms and central A/C. Is that difficult to find in Mililani at all? Or do we just open the windows when there's a breeze? I assume that the electric bill will be slightly less in Mililani than in Ewa Beach where it is warmer?
i lived in both those areas, by far Mililani Mauka is a better choice. as mentioned because of the elevations, you won't need to use the AC as much... or water the grass as much. in Mililani the temp was comfortable and there were decent breezes most of the year. but be warned that you will catch more rainy weather than in ewa.

in ewa, the electricity bill was outrageous because of the AC. but when you live in that area, you will die with out it. when i lived there back in '08, our house electric bill was 5 -6 hundred easy. this is with none of the room mates really cooking or using the dishwasher. i can't imagine what the bill would be like now. for some reason it seemed like either they didn't put insulation in or the one installed didn't really do the job.

as far as schools, by far Mililani Mauka has some of the better elementary schools. i've met ppl that work on hickam/pearl harbor that live up there, but they have multiple young children so it's worth it.

Double wall construction and insulation were added to the building code about 5 years ago.
