When I moved, I stayed in an inexpensive hotel. Only took a week to find a starter place. The hotel was $60 a night in Waikiki, and $10 a day to park at the Waikiki Banyon (I think it has gone up since then). You can probably find a VRBO for about the same rate if you factor in parking. I like the hotel route as you can check out early with no issues.
Looking back, I would have been wise to:
1. Raise my monthly rent budget to get a better quality place.
2. Realize that a studio apartment is WAY too small for my liking.
3. Visit the place in question at night. I like my cave dark, quiet, and cool. The first place was none of these.
I know I'm going to get VILLIFIED (even in spirit) by some of the Hawaii gatekeepers here, but you can also look at airbnb.com or even couchsurfing.com for a QUICK fix or to see various options.
These may NOT be what you are looking for, but it may be an option for your husband for a few days or weeks or even a month. I have used airbnb on traveling and my friend here in Hawaii just returned from a 3 week trip to London and Paris and used airbnb and had a fabulous time and met some good people.
Even some of the hostels on Lemon St have full private rooms for rent (tho i have no idea if there are age limites or rules on having a onward ticket). Like I said, I accept you're a comin' no matter what, so just throwing out things to giv you ideas to help out (and other like minded people who may be reading).
There is also the YMCA in Honolulu, which offers "Budget Accommodations", including a single room with private bath for [currently] $55/day, $290/wk.
